This was taken using KSnapShot on Kubuntu Linux 8.04, codename "Hardy Heron". The resulting PNG was optimised with pngout.

It shows various emulations and virtualisations.

There is an installation of Windows XP Pro running in "seamless mode" inside a virtual machine created by the VirtualBox program. This is displaying the XP bar at the bottom of the screen, and a window containing Internet Explorer 7. The desktop wallpaper that you can see is not from Windows, but is a dynamic map of the world generated by KDE.

Separate from this, in the bottom right of the screen, there is an Interactive Fiction game running in a program called WinGlulxe. This is a Windows program, and it is running by means of the Wine compatibility layer. No actual Microsoft code is used.

In the top left, you can see the DOSBox program running. This allows you to run any old DOS software. On top of this (and given a slight transparency so that you can see the DOSBox) is the DOS game "Beneath a Steel Sky" running in the ScummVM virtual machine, which is designed specifically to play certain DOS games.

Cascading from the top right, you can see three separate Vice windows. Vice is a full Commodore emulator, providing an exact copy of the C64, C128, Pet and some others. These three windows are all running the C64 emulator. The first one is the BASIC interface that you get when you switch on the C64; the second one is the game Ninja as it loads; the third one is the game Ninja in play.

Using the Compiz window manager on Linux, I was able to make certain windows translucent.
